A few weeks ago, we shared details of our Honest advocacy efforts related to cleaning products and ingredient transparency. You have a right to know the ingredients in the cleaners and detergents you use in your homes every day — and that’s why we’ve made a commitment to transparency and labeling ingredients on all of our products since day one. But as we’ve previously reported, ingredient disclosure in the cleaning product industry is not required under today’s laws.
At Honest, we’ve been actively engaged in establishing new standards for cleaning product labeling. We are thrilled to report that lawmakers in Washington, DC are taking action. Congressman Raul Ruiz, one of the only ER physicians in Congress, just introduced the Cleaning Product Labeling Act of 2017 (H.R. 2728), which would require cleaning products sold in the U.S. to have ingredients clearly listed on labels and online.
“Consumers, particularly parents, deserve to know what ingredients are in cleaning products,” said Dr. Ruiz. “As an emergency physician and as a father, this is particularly personal to me. If my daughters accidentally ingested a toxic cleaning product, I would want the peace of mind to know that when I called poison control or the CDC, I could easily read the ingredients and save precious seconds in determining how to respond. Accidents unfortunately happen and I have taken care of children in the emergency room who were exposed to chemicals in cleaning products. Knowing the ingredients in these products can help physicians make critical life-saving decisions. Requiring ingredient disclosure of cleaning products will help us all have better health outcomes.”
According to a 2010 study by the American Academy of Pediatrics, from 1990 to 2006 over 267,000 children under the age of five were treated in emergency departments for household cleaning product-related injuries.
