Mother’s Day is right around the corner, and there are few better ways to show your loved one how much she means to you than with a handmade gift she can cherish for years to come. Whether you are looking for a present with a personal touch, or a crafty activity you can share together, this week’s DIY is sure to be special.
These decorative towels have the same designer look of some you'd find at your favorite boutique sans the hefty price tag. Plus when you design them yourself, you know your gift is sure to be one of a kind! Simple to make, yet unique and on-trend, it will be hard not to keep a set or two for yourself.

Day-Glo Details
Embroidery is one of the simplest ways to add a personal touch to anything, especially when you use contrasting neon floss to really pack a punch! Decide on a pattern (freehand or download a stencil) and map out your design. For this towel, we first laid it flat and used a felt-tip pen to mark where we wanted the center of each of the flowers to be. We then sewed a single bead in place and stitched the “petals” around the outside working in a clockwise direction. The bead center could also be substituted with a button, sequin, or any other gem to add that extra something to your towel.
Tassel Trim
Tassels are trending for spring, from clothes and accessories to… dish towels! We found this pom-pom tassel trim in the ribbon section of our local fabric store, but be sure to take a spin through the home decor and tapestry sections for other unique options. Select a matching thread and carefully sew trim in place along opposites edges of your towel. It couldn’t be simpler, but the finished product looks particularly charming.
No Sew? No Problem!
Not the most needle-and-thread inclined? No-sew double-sided fabric tape will soon be your new best friend. Choose a few varieties of contrasting ribbon and cut them down to size. Secure fabric tape along the backside of your ribbon and smooth out. Peel off the sticker side backing and firmly press into place on your towel. Repeat this as many times as you would like and in just a few minutes you’ll have a super cute, but low-effort embellished towel.
We hope use these tips and ideas to spruce up other household items (drapes, pillows…). It’s fun to make things all your own, especially when it is so easy.
