We’re certainly not opposed to a little candy, but this time of year it can be hard to keep things balanced when there’s a bowl of it everywhere you look… especially when there’s sugar-obsessed children involved. So, we tested out a few kid-approved sweet treats that bring in all the fun, along with a few fruits and veggies.
Apple Smiles
Grocery list: Red apples, nut butter, marshmallows
- Slice a red apple into wedges. Try to make them no thicker than your pointer finger
- Take two wedges and spread a thin layer of your favorite nut butter onto one side of each
- Stick at least four marshmallows in a row to one of your apple wedges (Tip: place them on their side, so that the long side is stuck to the nut butter)
- Sandwich the other wedge on top nut butter side down
- Don’t worry about being too perfect. Your smiles will look cuter with crooked teeth
Strawberry Monsters
Grocery list: Green apples, nut butter, marshmallows, strawberries, chocolate chips
- Remove the stem of a strawberry and slice it a into very thin pieces from the point to the base. You should have as many slices as you want monsters
- Slice a green apple into wedges. Try to make them no thicker than your pointer finger
- Take two wedges and spread a thin layer of your favorite nut butter onto one side of each
- Stick a strawberry slice into the nut butter on one slice
- Layer at least 3 marshmallows on top using the same method as the apple smiles
- Sandwich the other wedge on top nut butter side down
- Smoosh one a marshmallow between your pointer and thumb finger. Swipe one side with nut butter and stick it to your top apple
- Press a chocolate chip into the marshmallow
- Repeat steps 7 & 8 if you want your monster to have two eyes
- Again, you don’t need to be too perfect here. Monsters are cuter when they’re a little crazy lookin’
Pumpkin Clementines
(AKA the easiest one)
Grocery list: Clementines, celery
- Chop a piece of celery into pieces that are about a half an inch long
- Peal as many clementines as you have celery pieces
- Stick your celery stem in the top of a clementine
