Instructions

  1. First, you’re going to create the basket of your hot air balloon. We’re used a large Diaper Bundle box, and you’ll just need to cut the bottom and top out using a box cutter. You can use duct tape to reinforce the inside of the box if you’d like.
  2. Next, write “SAND” on four paper bags with black marker. Fill the paper bags with any scrap paper you have lying around, then tie the bags closed with twine.
  3. Use a hole punch to create two holes on any side of the box - you’ll just want to place them close to the corner and near the top. Leave at least 5 inches on the top to make sure the box won’t tear. Repeat on the opposite side.
  4. Fill the balloon with helium. We rented a helium tank from a local party store, but you can also buy your balloons in store and have them filled there.
  5. Wrap the balloon net around the balloon, then tie the ends of the net to the holes your created on the sides of your box. You may need an assistant to help you hold the ends of the balloon net as you do this.
  6. Tie the sandbags to the sides of the box as your finishing detail.

Halloween is right around the corner! Be sure to check back next week for our fourth and final costume idea.
